Hi All
Chris suggested I put up my current project so here it is
The wife and myself bought our first house this year and as we are both into our cars parking was going to be an important thing for us, we where lucky enough to find a 2/3 bed end of terrace corner plot with a workshop in the back garden which the previous owner had built for his Yamaha R1 motorbikes that where only track based. The floor that he had put down was a false wooden floor which had started to get soft and i didnt fancy putting any of our cars in it let alone jacking it up or much other work on it too. We had some mates over not long after we moved in and he was curious to see what was under the floor so within 10 minutes of getting into the house we was in the workshop and ripped up one of the 6x4 sheets of 19mm ply in the middle of the workshop to see what was under it. Turns out it was nothing there was a 14inch air gap to the soil level, it stayed like that for about 3 months while i decided on what to do!
I workout out the square meterage to be 36m2 and then had to work out how much cubic metereage there was going to be... alot was the answer and then the best way to fill and make use of it. So I came up with a plan while still trying to keep it afoardable and useable too, just before a long weekend on a bank holiday I got 9 tonne bags of MOT type 1 and 2 tonne of sand too. I also need damp proofing material and reinforcing mesh and on the friday after finishing work later than expected and having to go to B&Q for tools as I didnt have anything I came home and started with one of these
once i got started noting happened that night lol so it was a good thing i had ripped up some of the ply sheets a few days before hand. On the saturday morning it was off to then local plant hire shop t get a wacker plate and recip saw to cut the wood out
after all the flooring was up and out the garden looked like this
and the barrowing started and leveling started
this carried all the way on throught till the end of sunday which saw it all MOT type 1 swallow up
at this point I manged to compact it all and that was to a 4inch depth so then a blinding layer of sand went down at about 1.5inches thick across the the top
then the damp proof and mesh went in and that was the end of mondays work
and tuesday was spent doing dump runs in our jag x type estate of the wood that we couldn't reuse I decided that the cost of getting a free pour seemed the way to go as it wasnt that bad but then i was told that I needed a line pump as the workshop couldnt be got to easyily enough with the truck and so it was not coming in at £1000 in cement and I still had to level it quickly before it set..... eek! Upto this point I had spent about £500 which was reasonable I though.
The mate that made the hole in the floor first off popped over on the wednesday as I had done all this and I told him my plans on continuing and he spoke to a build friend and asked a few question for me and they offered their services for that saturday for £500 if i bought the materials they would come in knock it up, lay it and level it too. After all that work i couldnt turn it down. Friday came and so did more material
8 tonne bags of ballast and 30 bags of cement. Well as I was paying them to come and do it tomorrow i went to the shops for more doombar to consume while watching lol
they did it all in 6 hours between 3 of them so worth spending the money out lol... I then waited 4 weeks before being pushed and finally caving to put the car in
Its still not finished there is some self leveling to go down and it to be sealed and painted before i look to get a scissor lift too as well as use some of those 4x2 that came out as worktop frames. The cost to get to this was just over £1500 the feeling on the first major works to our home and my man cave.... priceless ;-)
